Not far from where we were staying in Victoria Falls was a local church and Alison was able to make it there for midnight mass. This she found very interesting especially with some of the songs having a gospel influence and the altar girls being dressed in beautiful African costumes.

Then on Christmas day we treated ourselves to a five course meal in the very posh Victoria Falls Hotel. They had a really good live Jazz band who were able to play a range of music. The meal was first class as was their service and the surroundings. Read the rest of this entry »

This was our accommodation over the Christmas period. However, we didn’t get off to a good start! On arrival having been picked up by their shuttle service we found ourselves on the end of a tongue lashing from the staff. Apparently their shuttle staff had thought we were arriving earlier and hence had been waiting at the airport for a couple of hours. Being completely fair the mix up was on their part not ours. Firstly, we had confirmed our arrival date and flight in an email. Secondly, in their hurry to cut Alison short when we phoned them on arrival day they took the flight time for leaving Johannesburg as our arrival time! Their mistake not ours. A single road joins the two border crossing points with the bridge being located effectively in no man’s land. If you just want to visit the bridge for the views or if you want to do some bungee jumping you have to pass Zimbabwean immigration. As long as you don’t stay overnight in Zambia you can still do this on a single entry visa. You can still visit Zambia and see the falls from that side as well just as long as you return the same day. The Zimbabwean authorities at immigration and customs do not stamp your passport but stamp a separate piece of card on both entry and exit. However I’m not sure what they do on the Zambian side, it’s likely they would do the same but best check first.

Christmas was spent at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe at the aptly named Victoria Falls Backpackers. Before arrival we had concerns about the availability of accommodation and were unsure whether or not the Falls would be open as an attraction over the festive period. Alison had pre-booked the accommodation so that was squared away and with regard to the Falls being open – they’re open 365 days a year! So in the end we didn’t have any problems at all.
